Respite and rehabilitation care

What is respite and rehabilitation care?

Respite and residential care are types of care that offer flexible solutions designed to meet an individual’s short-term and long-term needs, providing essential support for individuals and their families during periods of transition or when permanent care becomes necessary. Respite care services can give families and loved ones who might be caring for someone a much-needed break, knowing their loved one is receiving professional care in a safe, warm, and welcoming environment.

How we deliver respite and rehabilitation care at Belmont Healthcare

At Belmont Healthcare, we provide respite and rehabilitation care that gives individuals time to relax and rest, safe in knowing we’ve got everything covered. Our care homes offer warm and welcoming environments and a community where individuals can create new friendships.

Our homes provide beautiful, spacious outdoor areas and gardens, we serve homely, cooked meals and all the expert care an individual might need whilst they are with us. Our friendly care team take time to listen and get to know every individual, helping them spend their days in the way they wish, whether it be getting involved in daytime activities, spending time in our gardens, or reading a book – life can be as involved or as laid back as you wish.

If someone is recovering from a period of illness or an operation, they may find it harder to carry out their usual day-to-day chores or activities. A respite stay in one of our care homes can help them to recover whilst boosting their health, wellbeing and confidence with professional, 24-hour support.

Respite and rehabilitation care FAQs

Our respite care services provide temporary relief for family caregivers while ensuring your loved one receives professional care in a safe, comfortable environment. Services include 24-hour nursing supervision, assistance with activities of daily living, medication management, nutritious meals and snacks, social activities and entertainment, personal care services, housekeeping and laundry, and access to rehabilitation therapies if needed. We also provide regular health monitoring and can coordinate with your loved one’s existing healthcare providers to maintain continuity of care

Respite care stays can range from a few days to several weeks, depending on your family’s needs and our availability. Short-term stays of 3-7 days are common for family vacations or brief caregiver breaks, while longer stays of 2-4 weeks may be arranged for extended caregiver recovery periods or family emergencies. We can accommodate both planned respite stays and emergencies when possible. Our team works with families to determine the most appropriate length of stay based on individual circumstances and care needs.

Our rehabilitation care services are designed to help individuals recover and regain independence following illness, injury, or surgery. We provide comprehensive short-term rehabilitation including physical therapy, occupational therapy, speech therapy, and skilled nursing care. Our goal is to help residents return to their highest level of functioning and, when possible, return home safely. Services include wound care, medication management, pain management, mobility training, strength building, cognitive rehabilitation, and family education to support continued recovery at home.

Rehabilitation care may be appropriate if your loved one is recovering from surgery, stroke, fall, fracture, illness, or hospitalisation and needs intensive therapy and nursing support to regain independence. Ideal candidates are medically stable but require skilled nursing care and multiple therapy services that cannot be provided effectively at home. Our admissions team can evaluate your loved one’s needs and work with their physician to determine if our rehabilitation program would be beneficial. We also consider factors such as motivation to participate in therapy and realistic goals for recovery.

The admission process begins with a phone consultation to discuss your loved one’s needs and our available services. We then schedule a comprehensive assessment, either at your home, hospital, or our facility, to evaluate medical, physical, and social needs. Our admissions team will review insurance coverage and financial arrangements, coordinate with current healthcare providers, and develop an initial care plan. Once all requirements are met, we can typically accommodate admissions within 24-48 hours for urgent situations. We provide a detailed orientation packet and welcome families to tour our facility before admission.

Our rehabilitation services are particularly effective for individuals recovering from orthopaedic surgeries, joint replacements, stroke, cardiac events, pneumonia, wounds, falls with injuries, general deconditioning, and chronic disease exacerbations. We also serve those transitioning from hospital to home who need a bridge level of care with intensive therapy and nursing support. Our interdisciplinary team has experience managing complex medical conditions, including diabetes, heart disease, COPD, and neurological conditions, while providing rehabilitation services.

Our rehabilitation and respite care team includes licensed registered nurses, licensed practical nurses, certified nursing assistants, physical therapists, occupational therapists, speech-language pathologists, and certified rehabilitation assistants. All clinical staff maintain current state licenses and certifications. Many staff members have specialised certifications in areas such as wound care, cardiac rehabilitation, or stroke recovery. All team members receive ongoing training in safety protocols, infection control, and person-centered care approaches.

Safety and well-being are maintained through multiple layers of protection, including 24-hour skilled nursing coverage, regular health assessments and monitoring, medication management by licensed nurses, fall prevention programs, infection control protocols, and emergency response procedures. We conduct regular safety rounds, maintain detailed care documentation, and have established relationships with local hospitals and emergency services. Our facility meets all state and federal safety regulations, and we maintain comprehensive insurance coverage for resident protection.

We have comprehensive emergency protocols in place, including 24-hour nursing coverage, established relationships with local emergency services, direct communication with attending physicians, and detailed emergency action plans for various scenarios. For serious medical emergencies, we immediately contact emergency services and notify family members. For less urgent issues, our nursing staff can often manage care on-site while keeping families and physicians informed. We maintain detailed medical records and can quickly provide relevant information to emergency responders or hospital staff when needed.

Our activity program includes physical therapy, occupational therapy, speech therapy, recreational activities, social events, arts and crafts, music programs, spiritual care services, and outdoor activities when weather permits. For rehabilitation residents, activities focus on rebuilding skills and strength needed for independent living. Respite care residents can participate in social activities, entertainment programs, and light recreational activities based on their interests and abilities. We also offer quiet activities like reading, puzzles, and television for those who prefer less stimulating environments.
