Dementia care

What is dementia care?

Dementia care is a specialist type of care and support that is designed for individuals living with Alzheimer’s disease, vascular dementia, and other forms of cognitive impairment. It focuses on maintaining dignity, comfort, and quality of life as the condition progresses. The early signs of dementia can include:

  • Short-term memory issues
  • Difficulty with problem-solving
  • Struggles with daily tasks
  • Language and communication problems
  • Poor orientation
  • Visual-perceptual difficulties

As dementia progresses over time, the needs of the individual will also change. Being in a care environment that is secure, calming, and with familiar routines, memory prompts, and therapeutic activities designed to reduce anxiety and confusion while encouraging engagement and social interaction is essential to ensure the individual is properly cared for.

How we deliver dementia care at Belmont Healthcare

Throughout our homes, we take great pride in providing tailored care to meet the needs of every person we support who needs dementia care. We do this by working closely with those in need of care and their families and loved ones. By listening to them, their families and friends, and understanding what their wishes are, we can identify the best care to suit their needs. Together, we create their individual and unique care plans to ensure we deliver the most beneficial care and support, whilst respecting each person’s aspirations, wants, likes and dislikes.

All our dementia specialist care homes are regulated by the Care Quality Commission, and our Dementia Care teams are specially trained to provide safe and effective dementia support. This includes training in dementia care techniques, including communication strategies, behaviour management, and creating meaningful connections with residents as their cognitive abilities change.

At Belmont Healthcare, we understand that dementia has an impact on families and friends of those who need dementia care. That’s why we are here to support families and loved ones in their care journey, living with dementia. Change can be stressful for us all, so we’ll help your loved one stay connected to family and friends, and we’ll always be on hand to provide them with guidance, advice or just a friendly ear to talk to.

Why choose Belmont Healthcare for dementia care?

Every person’s care journey with dementia is different. That’s why, at Belmont Healthcare, we personalise our care to what your loved one needs. We prioritise listening and getting to know you and your loved one, so that we can tailor their care and activities around them. We understand that small things can make a huge difference to someone with dementia, so we have introduced a ‘whole team’ approach to the care we provide, which includes our catering team knowing you’re your loved one’s favourite cup to drink from, or the Lifestyles & Wellbeing team knowing what their favourite pastime is.

With no day feeling the same, living with dementia means the world can often feel challenging. With round-the-clock care from our specialist dementia care teams, we’ll support your loved one to continue living a meaningful life.

Dementia care FAQs

Belmont Healthcare offers comprehensive dementia care services tailored to each stage of the condition. Our services include specialised memory care units with secure environments, person-centred care plans developed by our multidisciplinary team, cognitive stimulation activities, behavioural management support, and assistance with daily living activities. We also provide respite care for family caregivers and work closely with families to ensure continuity of care throughout the dementia journey.

Safety is our top priority. Our dementia care units feature secure entry and exit points with electronic monitoring systems to prevent wandering while maintaining a homelike atmosphere. We use subtle environmental cues and way-finding aids to help residents navigate independently. All staff receive specialised dementia care training, and we maintain appropriate staff-to-resident ratios to ensure constant supervision. Our homes are designed with dementia-friendly features, including good lighting, clear sight lines, and familiar, comfortable furnishings.

Our dementia care team consists of licensed nurses, certified nursing assistants, and care coordinators who have received specialised training in dementia care. All staff complete comprehensive dementia education programs covering topics such as understanding different types of dementia, communication techniques, behavioural management, and person-centered care approaches.

Absolutely. We believe family involvement is crucial for the well-being of residents with dementia. We encourage family members to participate in care planning meetings, attend activities when possible, and maintain regular communication with our care team. We provide family education sessions to help relatives understand dementia progression and learn effective communication strategies.

We take a person-centered approach to managing challenging behaviours, recognising that these are often expressions of unmet needs or responses to environmental factors. Our trained staff work to identify triggers and underlying causes rather than simply managing symptoms. We use non-pharmacological interventions first, including environmental modifications, activity redirection, validation therapy, and sensory approaches. When necessary, we collaborate with physicians and behavioural specialists to develop appropriate medication management plans. Our goal is always to maintain dignity and quality of life while ensuring safety.

Our activity programs are specifically designed for individuals with dementia, focusing on meaningful engagement that draws upon preserved abilities and long-term memories. We offer music therapy, art therapy, reminiscence activities, gentle exercise programs, sensory stimulation, and cognitive games. Activities are adapted to different stages of dementia and individual preferences. We also provide opportunities for spiritual care, pet therapy, and intergenerational programs. Our goal is to promote emotional well-being, maintain cognitive function as long as possible, and provide joy and purpose in daily life.

Yes. Each resident receives a comprehensive assessment upon admission that examines their medical history, cognitive abilities, behavioural patterns, personal preferences, and life story. Our care team, including nurses, social workers, and activities staff, collaborate to create a personalised care plan. We regularly review and update these plans as needs change, always involving family members in the process. Care plans address medical needs, safety considerations, behavioural strategies, activity preferences, and communication approaches tailored to each individual’s unique situation and personality.

Maintaining quality of life is central to our dementia care. We focus on preserving dignity, promoting independence where possible, and creating meaningful experiences. Our approach emphasises what residents can do rather than what they cannot do. We maintain familiar routines, honour personal preferences, and create opportunities for success and enjoyment. Our staff are trained to communicate with respect and patience, and we work to minimise stress and confusion in the environment while maximising comfort, security, and emotional wellbeing.
