Foraging is reminiscent of war time resourcefulness

Reminiscing about foraging took on a whole new meaning at Madeira Lodge Care Home when many thought back to war-time rations and the necessary foraging many families depended on for supplementary food.

Foraging apples and blackberries from the care homes locality, residents made jam out of the fruit and baked a loaf of bread ready for a group tasting session of bread and butter topped with the home-made jam.

Adelle Grant Activities Coordinator at Madeira Lodge Care says: “We all learn so much by talking, and reminiscing about foraging was certainly an eye opener for me. We even chatted about rosehip, so readily seen in our hedgerows but often ignored, many residents remember rosehip syrup being given to children during the war because of its high vitamin C content. The finale had to be the delicious jam we made, what a treat.”
