Intergenerational after school club is a hit

Students from The Marsh Academy attend an after school club with a difference – it is run by the residents at Madeira Lodge Residential Care home in New Romney.

Developed in partnership with the school’s health and social care teachers, pupils between the ages of seven and 13 routinely visit the care home to gain positive new life experiences through talking, listening and participation in joint activities.

More than just a fleeting visit, children actively participate in activities and conversation. With no fixed agenda both children and adults pass the time enjoying a creative task, playing a game, or learning more about eachother through conversation.

Sarah Pennington, Manager at Madeira Lodge Care Home says: “We really treasure our visits from the school children. Residents and pupils enjoy the interaction; friendships are being formed which is lovely to see. The benefits of intergenerational socialising brings so much, it is personally fulfilling for both and helps provide a sense of belonging in our community, something that was lacking for everyone during the pandemic.”
